Left Right Wrong

Investigating the default to design for right-handed people

An investigation into right-hand-centric design, exploring the relationship between form and function of objects designed for use with different hands.

Three sets of everyday objects designed for use by left handed people, right handed people, and by nobody at all.

A notebook bound on the right hand side is often more comfortable for a left-handed writer. A notebook bound on both sides isn’t comfortable for anyone.

The direction of the numbers on a ruler for a leftist run from right to left, so the hand isn’t blocking the view of the ruler. The numbers are jumbled on a ruler that functions for nobody.

The cards are marked in the top right corner in left-handed decks as it is easier to identify the cards when fanned out in their right hand. A deck of card with unmarked corners is really difficult for anyone to use.

Alternative Classifications

An exploration of methods of animal taxonomy

The life’s work of a fictional zoologist.

“The specimens presented here are all from the private collection of the prominent scientist and field researcher Professor Zoe O'Logie.

They have been specially selected because they particularly highlight her methods of taxonomy. Zoe is a woman of strong beliefs and one of those beliefs is that current methods of taxonomy are “outdated, convoluted and entirely incomprehensible.”

In her work she pioneers new, alternative methods of classification. She believes specimens should be grouped not by arbitrary features but by facts of their existence that are easy to identify and indisputable.

Her categories include:
‘Those that are Long and Thin’, ‘Those that are Delicious’, ‘Things that are Shiny, ‘Things that Become Other Things’, ‘Things that are Difficult to Contain’, ‘Things that Things See With and ‘Other’”

Creativity Toolkit

Products for struggling creatives

While researching creativity and the shared creative experience, I established four areas of universal struggle.

1. The Inner Critic
2. Validation
3. Creative Block
4. Self Expression

The Creativity Toolkit has a product to tackle each one.

1. Inner Critic Doll
Draw a smile on it, use it as a pincushion, or chop its head off - you can use this washable doll however you need to build a better relationship with your inner critic.

2. Okay Stickers
For work that’s just okay, but at least you made it!
Not everything you make is going to be a masterpiece, so use these stickers to acknowledge your hard work on your way to something brilliant.

3. The Whiteboard Sketchbook
This sketchbook made entirely of whiteboard plastic is impossible to keep perfect, prompting quick, imperfect drawing and erasing the fear of failure which often leads to creative block.
